Momentum Steelix Eclipse
The Steelix Eclipse is a new, updated, version of Momentum Watches best selling Steelix. Is it an upgrade on a proven design? Let’s check it out.
St. Moritz Watch Corp. designs and produces watches under the Momentum Brand. They are a Vancouver based company, with their watches assembled in Canada. Momentum has been producing watches since 1980 and produce a wide range of styles, with a focus on casual and outdoor designs.
The Steelix Eclipse is a rugged and handsome field watch. Constructed of 316L stainless steel with a smooth fixed bezel and a brushed finish. The case has a pleasing mix of smooth lines and angles, with a well executed crown guard at the 4 o'clock. The crown guard leads to an easily gripped signed crown. The watch has just the right amount of heft to it, a sure sign of the ruggedness of the Steelix.
The dial is extremely legible, with large applied 12, 3, 6 and 9 digits. Outside the dial is a colour matched chapter ring. Sword style hands sit on top of the dial and provide a clean look to the Eclipse, the hands have a contrasting black and lumed finish. The dial fits perfectly on a field watch, being no nonsense and easily readable. Momentum have taken the overall design cues of the Steelix and improved it, the dial has a cleaner and more mature presence to it.
The big upgrade on the Steelix Eclipse is in the movement. Powered by a Japanese made, Epson VS37A Solar movement means you never have to worry about a battery change. With a titanium-lithium battery you can store your Eclipse for up to 6 months without worry. Accuracy of 20 seconds a month provides solid accuracy.
The case is 44mm, giving it a great wrist presence but the sharply sloping lugs means it fits well too.
Momentum have taken their best seller, updated and upgraded it. With a greatly improved movement and a better looking dial it will provide years of service. With prices starting at $265 (CAD) it is a premium field watch at a budget price.
